American Flag : Free Texture Pack

Lately I’ve been watching sporting events on the Versus network, and from time to time they show their upcoming program line-up against a great looking American flag texture. The flag is a bit tattered and appears overlaid on a wood grain background. The more I saw this design the more I fell in love with it… So it inspired me to create a texture pack of similarly styled flags. Something about these textures really draws me in. Let me know what you think of them.

The fine folks at GoMedia have done it again. They saw a need, and filled it like only they can do. They felt the artist community was lacking in quality spray paint textures and they were right. Do a Google search for Spray Paint Textures and you’ll see for yourself.

Free Texture Pack: Photos of the Sun

It’s been a steady 100+ degree summer here in Central Texas. So to celebrate the record breaking heat, I have a texture pack which includes nothing more than photos of the sun. Dirty Knotty Wood – Free High Res Wood Textures

I will freely admit that I am addicted to wood grain as a design resource. I use it whenever I get the chance. IMO, it’s the most naturally random pattern in existence. It gives a great earthy feel to a project, as well as a nice grungy tone. These photos were taken from different fence planks all from the same fence. They’re nicely weathered and include knot holes and nails. Download and enjoy these dirty knotty wood textures!

I know what you must be thinking… Yes… I have been seen with my camera inches away from a fence post… “Back off man. I’m an artist.”

Free Texture Pack :: Crooked Bricks

It’s been a while since I posted a free texture pack, and I couldn’t pass this one up. While visiting family over the holiday weekend, I spotted this great crooked brick driveway. There’s old bricks, leaves, and to top it all off it had just rained, so the colors pop very nicely. Without hesitation I grabbed the camera and snapped a couple of shots to share with everyone here.

I’ve begun taking my camera almost everywhere. I believe that is great advice from one designer to another. You just never know when you’re going to come across something unusual enough to make a great texture or Photoshop brush. I’ve also begun using my own textures, brushes and vectors more than the ones that I’ve downloaded from the web. My own collection is starting to grow due to this blog, and that feels really good to me.

Free Texture Pack :: Tree Bark Textures

There is an old tree in our back yard that is huge, and crawling with great textures. I’ve used photos of this tree in at least 3 different projects. I’m lucky to have such a great design resource living and growing right in the back yard. So I thought I’d snap a few photos of bark textures to share with all of you. I got a little carried away with the amount of photos I took, but I narrowed it down to the top 3.

Free Texture Pack :: Steel Textures

How I love textures… let me count thy ways. Textures are a great addition to any designers bag of tricks.There are a ton of free texture on the web to download and use. But whenever possible, I always like to photograph my own. It gets me to thinking a little bit about the world around me, and what I can use in my designs.

I took these photos of slightly rusted steel while meeting on site with a client. This is most likely the first of many free textures that I’ll pass along. Enjoy, and have fun!
