I recently began work on an album cover design for The Jeremy Miller Band. These guys have been great to work with. The album is in progress now, and is planned for a November release date. Keith Davis is producing and they’re recording at Yellow Dog Studios here in Austin.
How I love textures… let me count thy ways. Textures are a great addition to any designers bag of tricks.There are a ton of free texture on the web to download and use. But whenever possible, I always like to photograph my own. It gets me to thinking a little bit about the world around me, and what I can use in my designs.
For the past couple of weeks I’ve been working on album cover designs for an Austin, Tx band called Astronaut Academy. The band is currently in LA recording their first album with Marck Paladino (producer, janes addiction, fleetwood mac). I’ve now completed my first project as part of my discounted graphic design services for Austin, Tx musicians! This logo is for a great Austin band called Pissant Farmers. I love the concept and potential branding aspects for this band’s name. It was a great experience exploring the options, and collaborating with these guys.
You never know when there’s a great Adobe Photoshop brush right in front of you waiting to be created. After a weekend in the garage working on a welding project, I never thought I’d come away with new Photoshop brushes. I built this set from some photos I took of sparks flying from a hand grinder. This is a great set of 8 high resolution brushes for adding sparks or splatter to your art.
It occurred to me a couple of weeks ago, that I’m missing out on a huge graphic design opportunity right in my own back yard. I was thinking about how much fun I’d had laying out a CD insert and disk art a few years back for a band called December in Tulsa, Ok. There’s just something about helping build an image or brand for a band, and their music or album. It just gets me excited from a design perspective.
I suddenly realized “Hey, why not offer my freelance graphic design services at a discounted rate to any Austin musicians”… So simple, why didn’t I think of it before?
So I’ve set out with a little advertising, and we’ll see what happens. Hopefully I’ll have some great designs, and some great Austin, Texas music to share right here in the coming weeks.
